Job Description :
Reporting to the Vice President, External Communications, the Director of Media Relations will lead financial and business communications and media relations for Lockheed Martin including development, and execution of strategy, plans, campaigns and initiatives encompassing media outreach, customer and shareholder communications and government relations. The Director of Media Relations will serve as chief spokesperson for the corporation and direct and develop the corporation’s proactive media engagement strategy for effective advocacy-building with key internal and external stakeholders.

Key skills and responsibilities:
• The successful candidate will be on the front-line driving media outreach while mentoring other media relations managers as a team player/coach
• This person must have the ability to develop internal relationships, work through LM’s matrix environment and advocate for a point of view – in a measured way
• Solid instincts and ability to act with urgency – balanced by respect for others
to make things happen
• Clear thinking and sound judgment to handle high volume of issues and requests from external/internal stakeholders
• Experience developing a team and coaching to help others achieve their potential
• Strong ability to gain internal respect and build consensus with executives, peers and subordinates
• Passionate about continuing to drive LM’s media relations activities from reactive to more proactive engagement
• Ensuring media relations and stakeholder outreach supports business and functional communications strategies
• Managing the development, planning, and execution of media engagements to support the Corporation’s business objectives
• Successful planning and execution of crisis communications plan for all contingencies
• Maintaining positive relationships with journalists, third party advocates and external publics
• Managing activities of corporate-retained domestic PR agencies
• Integrating electronic communications, including new media, into the overall strategy for reaching external and internal stakeholders and publics
• Identifying opportunities to enhance corporate reputation and manage risks that threaten the company’s image

Basic Qualifications
• 10+ years of Corporate Communications experience
• Previous experience as a spokesperson for a company
• Previous experience managing, developing and executing strategic communications plans for senior leaders
• Prior media relations experience
• Prior experience supporting C-suite executives
• Prior experience leading a team
• Superior writing and speaking skills and experience
• Advanced degree or training in a communications field and a minimum of 15 years broad communications experience

Desired skills
• Ability to multi-task and work well under deadline pressure with employees at all levels
• Working knowledge of the defense/aerospace industry
• Strong leadership skill / aptitude to be demonstrated through project management, strategic planning, and measurement/evaluation
• Efficient and effective planning and organizational skills, including exceptional attention to detail
• A successful track record conceptualizing and executing strategic vision, creative thinking, and coordination of complex programs
