Here within Lockheed Martin's Laser and Sensor Systems Business we are looking for a First Line Optical Engineering Manager and true Laser enthusiast to join our team. This position is for the Optical Engineering Department Manager reporting to the Bothell Engineering and Technology (E&T) Site Lead. This individual will be responsible for day to day staff management supporting successful attainment of all program cost, schedule, and technical performance objectives. The manager is responsible for personnel and resource management, project planning, scheduling, and execution of major development programs. Program duties include providing staffing with the appropriate training/skill/knowledge base; addressing staffing requests and performance adjustments; handling contract-related issues (program priorities, work schedules, tools, workload planning, workload balance, task monitoring, issue resolution, etc.); helping put together and executing recovery plans; reviewing Earned Value Management (EVM); dealing with out-of-scope requests; participating in key milestone event preparation (PDR, CDR, etc.); keeping the team, upper management, and Program Management informed via Items-of-Interest (IOIs), attending Monthly Program Reviews; and assuring that the Hardware Development process is followed. On occasion, the First Line Manager may be tasked with other special assignments. The position will focus on cultivating talent and technical leadership in personnel as well as instilling engineering process and discipline associated with support to a production environment.

The successful candidate must possess a high level of drive and dedication and a willingness to foster change to maximize the Bothell Team's best value to the business. Frequent collaboration across programs and within E&T will be required to facilitate and ensure on time delivery of current programs and the capture of emerging programs.

Basic Qualifications
• Strong leadership skills, excellent interpersonal skills and a people orientation towards tasks
• Proven track record as an accomplished optical engineer or laser scientist
• Willingness to collaborate and resolve organizational and/or personnel issues; Comfortable with leading change and guiding organizational decisions towards short and long term goals
• Ability to help focus organizational strategy on evolving the culture in Bothell
• Experience developing winning proposals for DoD customers
• Experience leading mixed discipline product development teams
• Clear understanding of all phases of the hardware development process
• Cost account management experience
• Demonstrated ability through work experience partnering across organizations to achieve results
• Demonstrated strong communications, coordination, integration, and advanced planning skills

Desired skills
Successful experience designing and developing laser systems from concept through sustained production, especially fiber lasers. In-depth understanding of CW and pulsed lasers, free space optical systems, optical parametric oscillators (OPOs), non-linear optical systems and optical design. Experience translating mid-TRL technology to high TRL products and solutions. Comfortable with emerging technology and the challenges that this environment presents. Experience developing and marketing lasers to DoD customers.
